Combining a Ramblers walking weekend with a spot of birding. A merganser pair on the river Usk, passing through the Glanusk estate, with an unconcerned red kite alighting in a tree just 15 feet from the path. Also a pied flycatcher in the woods leading up to the mast at the top of Graig Gwyr.
Started out at Carmel NNR – treecreeper, bullfinch, willow warbler, nuthatch, red kite, dunnock, jay. On to Dryslwyn – 20+ whooper swans, goosander pair.
Plenty of birdsong on a Spring-like day (14 degrees). From a song thrush on a fence post to a very vocal nuthatch. Also long tailed tit, jay and great spotted woodpecker. A couple of goosander (M+F) in fine plumage swimming and diving in the river flowing into lower reservoir. Dunnock, kite and peregrine in flight.
Lower reservoir: group of six female goosander resting on water close to wood-shaded edge of reservoir. Upper reservoir: grey wagtail, 3 kite, raven, buzzard.
Productive short walk on a naturally quiet morning. Great spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, bullfinch, nuthatch, red kite, buzzard, jay, coal tit, wren, robin and dunnock.
Short morning walk in Craig Y Nos country park – Dipper, yellow wagtail (3), blackcap (M), firecrest, long tail tit (4) .
